The meter is aimed at improving energy efficiency can be configured as either a credit, or prepaid meter. Communications is usually initiated from the meter using GPRS or SMS functionality, enabling a supplier or utility to gather information from all deployed meters in near real-time. The meter also listens to on-demand requests and can be instructed switch off loads or the complete installation in emergency load management situations.
GEM 200 also supports the NRS049:2008 smart meter specification functionality, which includes amongst others TOU (Time of Use) tariffs, load limiting, load control, staggered come-back loads (to management the maximum demand), remote disconnect and reconnect and remote metering and tamper detection.
